The magnificent work of art catches an old Tusker elephant crossing the Samburu frontier – tribal lands deep in the heart of Kenya. Taking photos of these wild elephants during the calving season is not without risk; photographers have been killed. The local tribal village has an orphan’s school class of children whose parents have been killed by elephant or lion and subsequently raised by the village.
The Samburu are a very ancient Nilotic people, they are part of the Maasi culture speaking a dialect of the more famous Maasi tongue. They are one of the most natural, uncorrupted tribes in the world, staying close to their traditions and culture. They are an exceptionally proud people and have fiercely retained almost all of their ceremonies and customs.
In their unique culture, the young men are known as Morans – a warrior in training, and historically their rite of passage was killing a lion single handed with their famous spears. After moranhood they pass into warrior status and can finally marry, but only outside their clan. Finally, as they age, a Samburu becomes honored as an elder. This artistic work, of the lone tusker passing through the acacia trees, into the hills and a distant future, symbolizes the path of the Samburu warrior passing into elder status and wisdom – as always the path to wisdom is a Lone Journey.
